tardis_stowaway: TARDIS under a starry sky and dark tree (high five or die 10)

Happy New Year, everyone!  *raises glass*  May your coming year be full of joy, hope, fellowship, and triumph over challenges. I have a mild cold, so I spent the evening at home coughing.  Now, time to greet 2011 with a 2010 retrospective meme.

Year in Fandom meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis

Your main fandom of the year?

Oddly enough for me, this is hard to answer.  For the first half of the year, it was my old stalwart Doctor Who, though at a slightly reduced intensity than during the RTD years.  Once I saw Sherlock in August, it took over the bulk of my fandom life.  Doctor Who never disappeared from my radar, so I suppose it wins.

Your favorite film watched this year?

 Inception.

Your favorite book read this year?

Geez, how am I supposed to answer that?  Honestly, I don't think anything I read filled me with quite so much happiness as Chicks Dig TimelordsThe Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell may take the trophy for the best fiction I read this year.  It was an emotionally difficult read, but so very worthwhile.  I read The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley for the first time since so long ago I don't remember, and I absolutely adored it.  My favorite novel actually published in 2010 is probably The Midnight Mayor:  Or the Inauguration of Matthew Swift by Kate Griffin.

Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?

Probably Florence + the Machine's album Lungs. Other favorite artists I discovered in 2010 include Mumford & Sons, Josh RItter, Lady Gaga, Marian Call. and Brandi Carlile.  I knew about Girlyman and Vienna Teng before this year, but they've been in very heavy rotation on my iTunes.

Your favorite TV show of the year?

I just don't know, y'all.  Sherlock has caused me to accost numerous people I know with wild-eyed cries of "you must watch this!"  In makes me squee so hard.  However, one of the three episodes is so much worse than the other two.  It's hard to declare two good episodes as the best TV of the year.  The last few episodes of Dollhouse, which aired in 2010, were pretty damn good, but they're eliminated due to the infuriating plot twist involving the identity of the big bad.  I'm not as intensely in love with Doctor Who's S5 as most of the other years of NuWho, but I think it still qualifies as my favorite of the year.  The Daily Show is also excellent whenever I remember to watch it.  I had a lot of fun watching The Walking Dead, but that was mostly for the fun of recognizing Atlanta locations I know overrun by zombies.

Your favorite LJ community of the year?

I've had so much fun with [livejournal.com profile] shwatchalongs .  Y'all should come watch with us!

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?

Sherlock.  A thousand times Sherlock

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?

Merlin's canon is so, so frustrating with its treatment of Morgana and general failure to realize the show's potential.  Also, I haven't had any fannish activity around them, but the Buffy "Season 8" comics really disappointed me this year.  Too much plot that makes no sense, too little respect for characters I love deeply.  In terms of happenings within fandom, some of the wank around Amy Pond and River Song was really disappointing from both their detractors and defenders.

Your TV boyfriend of the year?

I haven't had a celeb crush as strong as the one I carry for Sherlock Holmes/Benedict Cumberbatch in a long time.  Hot damn, that man is attractive.  That said, if I was looking for someone to actually date, it would be Rory Williams, winner of the Best Boyfriend in Two Millenia award.  My obsession with Dr. John "BAMF" Watson is vast and still growing.

Your TV girlfriend of the year?

Liz Ten.  She might be in only a few episodes, but she's the bloody queen of my heart.  My most lusted after female award goes to the unbelievably beautiful Morgana/Katie McGrath.

Your biggest squee moment of the year?

Probably Rory fighting a vampire with a broom in "Vampires of Venice" caused the most squeeing as it occurred.  Very close second place to the shock blanket/giggling at crime scene bit from "A Study in Pink" and Amy and Rory's wedding reception in "The Big Bang."  Also, I got on the Merlin train late, so watching S2 in 2010, "Lancelot and Guinevere" caused me rather massive squee with its multishipper potential and giant naked mole rats.

The most missed of your old fandoms?

While I'm still in Doctor Who fandom, I miss the RTD-era characters and the fierce passion I used to feel.  I still love Doctor Who, but in a more cool-headed sort of way. I'm still pissed off about Dollhouse getting canceled and sad that the fandom seems pretty quiet now that the show is off the air.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?

I keep hearing good things about Fringe.  I should watch that show one of these days.

Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?

Rory as a regular on Doctor Who, a new series of Sherlock, attending Gallifrey One again, reading the massive stack of books I got for Christmas.  Is the new series of Torchwood due this year?  I'm cautiously excited about that.

AHH BRANDI CARLILE SHE IS THE BEST.

And yes, you should absolutely watch Fringe. It starts weak, and then becomes simply fabulous.

Happy New Year, dude!

Such a good book... that I can't bear reading again. "Emotionally difficult" is right.

That said, if I was looking for someone to actually date, it would be Rory Williams, winner of the Best Boyfriend in Two Millenia award.

Amen! So. Much. Love for Rory.

Liz Ten. She might be in only a few episodes, but she's the bloody queen of my heart.

She was awesome, wasn't she?
