tardis_stowaway: TARDIS under a starry sky and dark tree (can't giggle crime scene)

I finally got around to seeing the final episode of Sherlock the other day.  There is quite a lot to squee about, including  the awesomeness that is Dr. John Watson, the pretty cinematography, and the slightly mad, often infuriating, utterly brilliant prettiness of Sherlock himself.  Benedict Cumberbatch is not merely a set of amazing cheekbones, he also peppers interviews with words like bombastic and tempestuous, and he has a ridiculously sexy voice.  I want him to narrate everything ever.  EVER.  Also, Benedict Cumberbatch is such a wonderfully silly name that I wouldn't believe it if someone called a fictional character that.

HOWEVER!  Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are vicious for ending the show there.  They probably sat around for hours practicing their evil laughs when they came up with that ending.  If a new series has just recently been greenlit and the Moffster is also doing his job for Doctor Who, goodness knows how long we're going to be hanging from the edge of that big honking cliff.

An entirely different and much less lovable bit of writerly evil was the decision to paint Asian culture as a bunch of exoticized cliches in the second episode.  :(  Seriously, of all the things to carry over from the Victorian-era canon, why did it have to be Orientalism?  FAIL.  The fail burns especially strongly because there are only three episodes extant.

Still, there is enough awesomeness in the first and third episodes that I'm definitely still all a-squee.  I need a little bit of fic to cushion the fall into hiatus.  Does anyone who is less behind the times than me have fic recs?  I'd be happy with gen, Sherlock/John, or frankly anything within reason if it's well done.  Bonus points for Watson being awesome.

In my extremely limited reading so far, two excellent stories are:

-Lab Book by sam_storyteller (aka [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge ).  This is precisely the Sherlock/John fic I wanted to read and didn't know it beforehand.  Judging by the number of comments, the same goes for the rest of the internet.  If you have missed it, go forth and behold Sherlock turning his focus onto John, John picking up some of Sherlock's deduction tricks, unexpected kissing on a late-night street, hilarity, and general amazingness.

-Other Things to Do After Buying a Cat by BlackEyedGirl.  Sherlock is so short on female characters that you wouldn't think femslash was possible, but it is, and it is great.  This story takes Sally and Molly and makes them more than cliches or jokes.  They deal with some of their issues with regards to Sherlock and build something entirely their own.  This sort of fleshing out characters and deepening canon is why I love fandom!

Meanwhile, it has been super foggy and cold the past two days.  If y'all are tired of summer, come on over to the CA central coast.  There's none around here.  Bring a little of it with you for my sake.

That second episode infuriated me, especially considering how utterly irrelevant it is in light of the first and the third. But I do love the first and the third (not counting the evilness of the ending, which I felt was uncalled for and a cop-out).

I TOTALLY AGREE that Benedict Cumberbatch should narrate everything. EVERYTHING. A friend of mine pointed out that he sounds like Alan Rickman, of whom I also think this, heh.

I saw a review of Sherlock that described Benedict Cumberbatch's voice as "like a jaguar in a cello," which definitely evokes the idea. Alan Rickman is another good comparison. Perhaps they will have to alternate narrating everything so neither of them ends up unduly hoarse.
