Boyd?

Boyd?

BOYD???!  IS IN CHARGE OF ROSSUM?!?!?!?!

NOOOOOO!!!!!

I'm picking my jaw up off the floor here.  This is one crazy Dollhouse twist I'm not happy about.  I need to think about it some more and see next week's episode before I fully judge this development, but my visceral reaction is to be thoroughly upset that steadfast Boyd is so completely not what he seemed.

But then why the encouraging of Echo's self-awareness?  Why tell Adelle to take her house back?  It doesn't make sense.  Was that all done in the name of making himself completely trustworthy to Echo and Adelle?  Has his own corporation gotten out of his control, making him decide to take it down?  Or is helping the rebellion all part of some really frickin' elaborate plan for world domination or whatever?

Argh, the brain cannot take it.  Please imprint me with someone smarter and perhaps able to keep some small bit of emotional distance.

Meanwhile, a ton of other stuff also happened!

Adelle DeWitt rocks my socks. She quips! "You forced me to come to Arizona.  I loathe Arizona."  "I think we can safely say that this carpet is done for."  She is one hard-ass bitch, putting Dominic back in the frickin' attic.  She talks Topher down from a panic attack.  Adelle, you are awesome.  Please never be my enemy.

Dr. Saunders was living with Boyd, and it was all super cute at first.  She came back to the Dollhouse and got to tell Topher to stop talking.  Then she and Boyd played out a scene from Epitaph One, and it was all sad and exciting at the same time!  Then she shot Bennet!  I mean, it's not that I hadn't wanted to do that a little bit, but WTF?  Did Boyd/Rossum/somebody indeed imprint her to be a sleeper assassin, as they seemed to think onscreen?  (Nooo!)  Or did she do that of her own initiative, possibly trying for maximum cruelty to Topher?

Speaking of Topher, he broke my heart a bit near the end when he told Ivy to get out, finally complimenting her for something other than juice fetching and telling her to get away before she became like him, all the while spattered with blood.  Eeep!   I thought for a moment he was going to slide into full Epitaph One incoherence, but with Adelle's encouragement he pulled it together...for now.  I wasn't a fan of the Topher/Bennett romance angle, since her initial appearance made her a bit too sadistic for me to also find her cute, no matter her social awkwardness.  However, having her blood all over Topher and his lab equipment was NOT how I wanted that plotline to end.  Poor, tragic Topher.

As for everyone else, Victor and Sierra are totally cute for the few moments they are onscreen.  Please come back and be around more next week, y'all!  I <3 Laurence Dominic in his space pajamas making an epic escape from the attic.  I'm not surprised that the thing Topher had to take from Paul was his love for Echo, and I hope it stays gone.  Echo herself, however, is growing on me, though still not as much as the other non-Paul characters.

In conclusion, JOSS WHEDON, CURSE YOUR SUDDEN YET INEVITABLE HEARTBREAKING!

Next week's episode title is "The Hollow Men," which is of course also the title to T. S. Eliot's magnificent, dark poem that ends

This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

I'm biting my nails already!

I'm tempted to join you in that Egyptian river.

There is definitely part of me that wants to rewatch all of Dollhouse right away in hopes that I can make sense of the confusion.

I just can't believe I let Joss do this to me.
I should have known not to trust and believe in any of his characters blindly.
Damn you Joss, you know just how to lull me into your web.

Yeah, with the announcement of a Big Bad that nobody has seen, with Joss it was pretty much inevitable that it would turn out to be somebody we know and love. But...Boyd! D: Also, he had me thinking in the previous few episodes that Adelle had slid over to the dark side, but that assessment turned out to be gloriously false. I guess after that I wasn't thinking about questioning main characters quite so much.
