It's icon meme time! This is ganked from [livejournal.com profile] isiscaughey .

1. Comment to this entry saying 'ICONS!' and I will pick 6 of your icons.
2. Make an entry in your own journal and talk about the icons I picked!

My six:

caterpillar
I really like insects, and caterpillars are some of my favorites. My first year out of college I worked in an ecology lab where one of my tasks was raising caterpillars (Spodoptera exigua, the beet armyworm) for the Boss Prof's experiments on plants' induced resistance to herbivore attack. The beet armyworms were lovely, cute caterpillars that turned into the most boring gray moths you have ever seen. I liked working with them, except when they came down with the horrible virus that made them disintegrate into black goo. Anyway, this icon is from an illuminated old copy of the Book of Hours, and I think it's lovely. I don't use it much, but sometimes I have occasion to talk about critters. Have you walked into the Young Adult section of a bookstore lately? They're all full to bursting of Twilight and various knock-offs. It's disturbing. I have a weakness for vampire novels, even somewhat cheesy ones like Charlaine Harris's books, but there are limits to the amount of cheese and badness I will tolerate. I have so far avoided reading any of the Twilight books because one of the first times I heard about them was reading a feminist critique that made me want to stay far, far away, but I've recently decided that if I can get a hold of a copy without any money going to Stephanie Meyer then I should probably read the first one. Criticizing something you haven't read is not good practice, plus I'd like to be able to better tease my students who read it. I use this icon when talking about YA books (a genre that contains a lot of genuinely quality stuff), vampires, etc. By [livejournal.com profile] x_bohemienne.

global threat level
Ever wondered what danger level comes above red? Well, mauve, but beyond even that is OMGWTFBBQ! If I recall, this icon came from a batch related to Children of Earth. We never see that American-accented newscaster unless things are pretty bad for Earth, but the situation with the 456 was a doozy even by her standards. This is a great icon for when things are really bad for me or the world at large but I'm trying to keep a sense of humor about it. By [livejournal.com profile] redscharlach .

eight/rose
Eight/Rose: the pairing of Epic Pretty. This icon does justice to the beauty, while the glowing -eyed Bad Wolf Rose suggests the timey-whimey nature of the pairing. I really like Eight from the few Big Finish audios I've listened to and even the silly TV movie, and I absolutely love well-written fic with Eight, especially Eight/Rose. by [livejournal.com profile] alizarin_skies .

sabriel
This is from the cover of Sabriel by Garth Nix, a book I utterly adore. I've reread it at least three times since I first read it in high school. It has one of the most original high fantasy systems of magic around and a beautifully realized world (with maps!). Sabriel is latest in the line of Abhorsens, magicians who use bells to combat the restless dead spirits and lay them to rest. This book is scary, exciting, sometimes funny, and peopled with great characters. I love the elegant, unsettling cover art. I wish all the teenage girls who are reading Twilight would go read this superior YA novel instead. There's still romance, but Sabriel is an actual good role model. Briar Rose
This is from a painting of Briar Rose (aka Sleeping Beauty) ascending the stairs to the tower where she ends up pricking her finger and sleeping for 100 years. As you have probably noticed if you read my fic, I'm a fanatic for fairy tales. :) I think the sense of exploration in this icon is beautiful. The painting is by an artist named Ruth Sanderson, while the icon is by [livejournal.com profile] roxicons .

I completely love Garth Nix and his Abhorsen universe! I wish he would've wrote more!

Yay, another Sabriel fan! A quick check around the internet reveals that he has some notes for both a prequel and a sequel in the Old Kingdom series, but may or may not ever get around to writing them.
