It is immensely entertaining to watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier with someone who is unspoiled about the Winter Soldier storyline.  When I was watching it in the theater for the first time, the friend I was with gasped and covered her mouth with her hands when Steve first recognized Bucky. (I was involved enough in fandom that even though at that point I hadn't read the relevant comics I already knew the Winter Soldier's identity.) Tonight, I watched it with a different friend who is good with faces, so as soon as the Winter Soldier was unmasked she said out loud, "Oh my god, is that his friend?!?"  Experiencing the reveal vicariously through unprepared non-fandom people is super fun.

Having just re-watched CATWS, I am once more awash in feelings.  All I really want to do is read fic.  Alas, I have an early start and a punishingly long work day tomorrow, so I need to go to bed.

Omg, this is so weird XD I've never read Marvel comics at all, but I was so stuck in the fandom that I didn't even consider Winter Soldier's identity being a surprise for anyone but, well, you know, Steve and co. XD This had to be awesome to see other people react like that though. Sometimes I really enjoy watching fandom things with non-fandom folk. Like, okay, usually it ends in a disaster of me trying to overexplain things, because I can't stop myself, but sometimes they react to something or point something out that was obvious/automatically explained in my head due to fandom.

(Though it does remind me how all of my friends laughed at me after I told them how I reacted to the X-Men:First Class, being almost completely unspoilered about X-Men in general. Apparently it was not supposed to be a shock that Charles and Erik don't get along in the end. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

Yeah, watching things with non-fandom folks is sometimes an exercise in frustration and accidental word-vomit, but sometimes it's super entertaining to see how they react.

I am LOLing at your impressive lack of spoilers regarding X-Men. Erik and Charles breaking up must have been quite the epic shock if you had no inkling that it was coming!

I watched the movie with my bf a couple of weeks ago and he was super shocked when the Winter Soldier was unmasked. So much fun! :D

I'm glad you also got the experience of watching the Winter Soldier with someone so adorably unspoiled!

I can't imagine watching Winter Soldier without knowing who the Winter Soldier is in advance! I don't think I could have avoided that fact. How fun for you and them!

Yeah, the knowledge is pretty widespread in fandom, even among those who aren't specifically in Marvel fandom but who get it through fandom osmosis. But these are the sort of people aren't really fannish about any SFF media, who may not have seen all of the MCU movies and certainly haven't looked at a discussion of comics online or paid enough attention to the cast list before seeing the movie to spot Sebastian Stan. For them, a storyline that first appeared in comics ten years ago still has the power to shock.

Oh, those sweet summer children, so unprepared! I laugh at them to distract myself from Steve's less funny shock.
