tardis_stowaway Just as Doctor Who is about to be done for a year, I am sadly at the end of available episodes of another show too. Yes, I finally finished watching Merlin. I enjoyed it all the way through, although the next to last ep, "The Fires of Idirsholas," broke my heart. Nooo, Morgana! She made some seriously bad choices, to put it mildly, but she did seem unsettled by the magical attack Morgause used her for. Then Merlin managed to eliminate the chance of persuading Morgana that violent rebellion isn't the answer when he tried to poison her. :( Merlin also has the deaths of all the people the dragon killed on his conscience.
Jeez, this cracky show became all SRS BSNS. I am in favor of character development, but did it really have to be Morgana and Merlin both attempting murder and Morgana being taken away from Camelot? Come back, Morgana! Gwen misses you! At least we still have Merlin and Arthur being adorable together. Arthur has a truly amazing knack for being knocked unconscious, falling asleep, looking away, and generally failing to put the clues together about Merlin and hispassionate love magic.
Day 14 - Favorite male character
This is another tricky one! Declaring one a favorite feels like a betrayal of all the other characters I adore. My preferences tend to shift with time. I'm tempted just to say that the brief and hilarious appearance of Victopher on Dollhouse pwns all and be done with it. However, I think I'm going to endeavor to make a choice. First, let's hear it for some runners-up, in no particular order (and where they can be found): Fox Mulder (X-Files), Oz (BtVS), Captain Jack Harkness (your pants), Wash (Firefly), Spock (Star Trek: TOS), Merlin (Merlin), Victor (aka Tony; Dollhouse), Spike (BtVS), Wilf (DW), Hiro Nakamura (Heroes), Sam Tyler (Life On Mars), Ianto Jones (Torchwood), and many others that I might list if you asked me on a different day.
Those paying attention have probably noticed that one character is conspicuous in his absence from that list. My choice for favorite male character is The Doctor.
Why the Doctor?
-Eleven times more character to appreciate than anyone else!
-He makes things a little more sonic.
-He's like fire and ice and rage and bananas and things that go ding when there's stuff (and, in some regenerations, like sex on legs).
-He takes so much joy in the universe.
-His angst is epic.
-He takes awesome people under his wing and inspires them to be even more awesome.
-Some of the coolness of the TARDIS rubs off on him.
-He's a tremendously complex character, including a thoroughly scary dark side balanced with his tremendous goodness.
-He gets great lines. (Fifty seven academics just punched the air!)
-Nine hundred years old and he can still fall in love with an ordinary Earth shopgirl.
-He offered me chocolate:
The Oncoming Storm, the Destroyer of Worlds, the madman with a box...by any title, he's fantastic. He makes monsters tremble; he makes Einstein look like a dribbling idiot; he makes really cheesy jokes. He's the Doctor. And he's got a library card.
