Well then!

Oh hell no!

THEY KILLED RORY!!!!!!!  AND ERASED HIM FROM AMY'S MEMORY!!!!!!  NOT OKAY!!!!!!!!!!

Rory had rapidly become my favorite of the three regulars this season.  I loved his big heart, his insight, and his ability to rise to the occasion, thriving in the time-traveling, world-saving lifestyle that he hadn't chosen for himself.  I appreciated the way he seemed able to have an honesty with the Doctor that the Doctor doesn't share with Amy.  He was particularly awesome in this two-parter, serving as spokesperson for humanity when the Silurians asked who would speak and acting as the conscience of the surface group when he insisted that they at least return Alaya's body to her people.  (In retrospect, a sudden increase in visible awesome should have been an indication of likely death.)  I'm heartbroken that he's not around any more.  His death was so unexpected in a previously decent threat-of-the-week (well, the fortnight) episode.  I yelped loudly at the screen, but was too shocked to cry.  Making Amy forget him leaves a particularly bitter taste around his death, much like Donna with her stolen memories and reversion back to her pre-Doctor personality.

That said, I think the forgetting at least will be undone.  That ring left on the TARDIS console is a Chekhovian gun if I ever saw one, and the crack will surely be fixed in the season finale.  (The TARDIS is NOT going to stay blown up.)  The crack may well spit back out its victims.  However, he'd already been shot.  When the light touched him, he was either dead or very close to it.  I think Rory will be brought back alive, both because of Moffat's dislike of killing people and because there are some things a fan just HAS to believe to keep her sanity, but it's not certain.

Other than that, I overall liked Cold Blood, and I thought was a big improvement on The Hungry Earth.  The earlier episode had a number of fairly interesting elements but somehow ended up rather blah.  In "Cold Blood," I really appreciated how the Silurians and humans were both complex and non-monstrous, with reasonable motivations and a sense of morality that they occasionally transgressed across in their drive to survive and protect their loved ones.

Nasreen was definitely the best thing about THE/CB.  She was chock full of brains, heart, and spirit.  I loved how she insisted on accompanying the Doctor in the TARDIS.  She seemed to have great friend chemistry with the Doctor. She's definite companion material, but if that's not going to happen I do think staying with the Silurians was fitting.  (That said, there is no reason the Doctor can't eventually land in 3020 to see her again!)

Am I the only one who saw the Doctor reaching into the crack, remembered the heavyhanded voiceover about his loss, and thought he was about to lose a hand or arm?  Since it's way too long after regeneration to regrow it like Ten, he'd need to get a robotic hand like Luke Skywalker, or possibly a piratical hook.  It would have been awesome!  Not so awesome were the incessant mentions of Amy being dressed for Rio when she really wasn't.  She was wearing shorts, yes, but she had tights on under them, and she had a leather jacket.  That might be too light for the local weather, but it's too heavy for Rio.  According to Wikipedia, Rio's average minimum temperature is 84˚F/20˚C.  Unless she was expecting Rio to be unusually cold, she should have left off the tights and/or the jacket.  Also, whoever called the green fellows Homo reptilia needs some science education, since they are clearly not in the same genus as humans.  They're not even mammals!

Next week:  Vincent Van Gogh!  This looks potentially really cool. I hope they let us see the Doctor grieving for Rory a bit, because it doesn't seem right to let his death go entirely unremarked the very next week.  *sniffle*
