Ten's justification of his actions with all the "Time Lord victorious" and winning the Time War rhetoric goes completely opposite Nine's attitude, and it's NOT a good or healthy change. A lack of hugs and kisses might have played a roll in letting Ten sink as far as he has (but it's not a complete explanation), and perhaps there is a place for them later in the journey of pulling him back. However, right now what he needs is a Tyler or Noble slap, Nine's withering Disapproving Glare of Doom, or some other very firm method to take him down several notches.
I've been wondering about Ten's inflated fear of death too. He seems to alternately seek death out and run away top speed. I think fear that he won't regenerate is distinctly possible. The prophecy is "your song is ending," where regeneration seems to me more of a song changing key.
