Lyrics guessing meme

I've done this meme before, but [livejournal.com profile] isiscaughey just did it again.  I thought it might be fun to play again.

1. Open up your music player. Hit shuffle.
2. Record the first few lines of the first 25 songs that come up that do not give away the name of the song. Skip instrumentals, but don't skip the embarrassing ones.
3. Make hapless LJ/DW denizens guess the song names and artists. Google is cheating. For musical songs, the name of the musical is acceptable in place of the artist.
4. Cross out the songs that have been guessed.
5. Pass it along.

As before, my iTunes seems to get in moods where it wants to play a whole ton of certain artists and ignore the diversity of my music library.  For the sake of variety, I decided not to list more than two songs by well known artists even if iTunes tried to give me three, and two of the most obscure artists who popped up in the meme were limited to one song each just to create more guessable options.

For any songs in here that I own as covers, I will accept either the original artist or the version I own.

1.  Heading down south to the land of the pines, thumbing my way into North Caroline, staring up the road and pray to God I see headlights.  Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] joking.  "Wagon Wheel," Old Crow Medicine Show.

2. Everybody was kung fu fighting, those kids were fast as lightning.  In fact it was a little bit frightening, but they fought with expert timing.  Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen.  "Kung Fu Fighting," Carl Douglas

3.  Today my childish laughter falls away.  The stakes were real and we won't feel okay.  With a knot of bitter worry in my eyes, and a tearless year or two since the last day, the last damn day, the last day that I cried.

4.  Alcohol, my permanent accessory.  Alcohol, a party time necessity.  Alcohol, alternative to feeling like yourself.   Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen.  "Alcohol," Barenaked Ladies.

5.  May God bless and keep you always, may your wishes all come true, may you always do for others and let others do for you.  Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] isiscaughey.  "Forever Young," Bob Dylan.

6.  I spent a year in the mouth of a whale, with a flame and book of signs.  You'll never know how hard I fell trying to make up for lost time.

7.  If shame had a face I think it would kinda look like mine.  If it had a home would it be my eyes?  Would you believe me if I said I was tired of this?

8.  So I walk through to the haze, and a million dirty ways, now I see you lying there, like a li-lo losing air.

9.  You say you don't look at me, I say you don't look so good.  I went out in the cold to buy a paper, pushing every button in the elevator.

10.  What did you think when you gave that cat a call?  Did you think it would make me want you?  Did you think it would turn me on?  Well that's exactly what it did, that's exactly what it did not do.

11.  Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone, I hear you call my name and it feels like home.  Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] isiscaughey.  "Like a Prayer," Madonna.

12.  This time I'll be sailing, no more bailing boats for me, I'll be out here on the sea, just my confidence and me.

13.  I got rid of the shackles that bound me, and the guards that were always around me.  There were tears on the mail mother wrote me in jail.  Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] isiscaughey.  "Free From the Chain Gang Now," Johnny Cash.

14.  Sharing with us what he knows, shining eyes are big and blue, and all around him water flows, this world to him is new, this world to him is new.

15.   The hydrofield cuts through my neighborhood, somehow that always just made me feel good.  I can put a spare bulb in my hand and light up my yard.  Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen.  "Light Up My Room," Barenaked Ladies.

16.  I'll tell you a story that happened to me one day as I went down to Cork by the sea.  The sun it was hot and the day it was warm, says I a quiet pint wouldn't do me no harm.  Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] redjaywrites and [livejournal.com profile] isiscaughey.  "Johnny Jump Up," traditional, performed by the Brobdingnagian Bards.

17.  Check your weapons at the door, you don't live here anymore.  But a heart cannot repent when it doesn’t know it's spent its lifetime beating itself to death.

18.  The hills are burning, fields turn to steel.  The big house is haunted with what we don't feel.  All the streets are empty, no one ever comes around.

19.  Hey kind friend, I don't know when I'll see you again, on a ferry boat bound for Victoria laying down to hide from the wind.

20. Come to the dance we step in a circle, dance to the earth and your soul attune.  Come with a sing for the love of the Mother, sing with the voice of the rising moon.

21.  We're gonna wake this city tonight, watch it burn into the twilight.  I said hey hey hey, this is our birthright, to be bought and sold, shipped off ready to die.

22.  Come to me now, and lay your hands over me.  Even if it's a lie, say it will be alright, and I shall believe.

23.  All through the night I'll be awake, and I'll be with you, all through the night, this precious time, when time is new. Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] isiscaughey.  "All Through the Night," Girlyman.  Cover of Cyndi Lauper.

24.  You were fresh off the boat from Virginia, I had a year of New York City under my belt.  We met in a dream, we were both nineteen.  I remember where we were standing, I remember how it felt.

25.  All the happy couples on their way to New Orleans, reminding me of when we got along.  They're only renting time and space to fill up with their dreams, and dreams are what they'll have when they have gone.

16. Johnny Jump Up. The version I have is by Gaelic Storm but not sure about yours?

[identity profile] tardis-stowaway.livejournal.com 2012-07-23 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Right tune! My version is by the the Brobdingnagian Bards, but of course there's no way to know that by lyrics alone.

5. Forever Young, Bob Dylan
11. Like a Prayer, Madonna
16. Johnny Jump Up, artist I dunno. I have Gaelic Storm's version...
23. All Through the Night, either Cyndi Lauper or Girlyman

[identity profile] tardis-stowaway.livejournal.com 2012-07-23 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Correct on all four! My version of Johnny Jump Up is recorded by the Brobdingnagian Bards, and I have the Girlyman cover of All Through The Night.

1) Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show. I LOVE THAT SONG.

[identity profile] tardis-stowaway.livejournal.com 2012-07-23 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
IT'S AN AMAZING SONG. I'm glad you guessed it. I was going to have to be very disappointed in my flist if nobody got that one. :)

[identity profile] joking.livejournal.com 2012-07-23 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been playing it on guitar and banjo with my friends a lot recently. It's a great song for a bunch of musicians to get together and play.

[identity profile] sylvansafekeepe.livejournal.com 2012-07-23 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
ARGH. I've actually played that *onstage every week for a month*, but I still didn't recognize it. Perhaps I should start learning lyrics at some point...

[identity profile] tardis-stowaway.livejournal.com 2012-07-23 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That is an impressive level of obliviousness. You must have been REALLY focused on your fiddling.

It can be tricky to ID lyrics without any tune or even rhythm to go along with them.

[identity profile] minervamoon.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
I just wanted to let you know that I know exactly 0% of your songs, including the ones that were already guessed.

[identity profile] tardis-stowaway.livejournal.com 2012-07-24 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, iTunes selected a lot of less well known songs for me this time. I am impressed that you don't know "Like a Prayer" or "Forever Young."

You should do the meme so we can see if I'm similarly baffled by your music!

13. Johnny Cash, I'm Free From the Chain Gang Now

[identity profile] tardis-stowaway.livejournal.com 2012-07-26 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! You're correct.
