Music lyrics meme
I grabbed this one from
eponymous_rose. Let's play!
1. Open up your music player. Hit shuffle.
2. Record the first few lines of the first thirty songs that come up that do not give away the name of the song. Skip instrumentals, but don't skip the embarrassing ones.
3. Make hapless LJ denizens guess the song names and artists. Google is cheating. For musical songs, the name of the musical is acceptable in place of the artist.
4. Least hapless LJ denizen wins admiration. That's right, just like a lobbyist in budget season, the points don't matter.
ETA: 17 guessed, 13 to go! Some of the remaining ones are pretty obscure or hard to guess from lyrics alone, but there's a few I bet someone out there knows.
Shuffle seems to have given disproportionate representation to some artists and especially a particular album for this meme, but that's probability for you. I've warned you when I had to skip some lyrics to avoid giving the title away. Sometimes this is just a few words, sometimes a whole stanza.
1. Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And everything you do

Since I was born on Broadway, baby!
Moved downtown when I was just nineteen,
To start a new life on the New York scene.
3. (not the opening lyrics) Well what is this that I can't see
With ice cold hands takin' hold of me
4. This old highway is just a lonely patch of blue and gray
And late at night my memory obfuscates my line of sight

5. (not the opening lyrics) A sweetheart left behind
Far from the hills of the sea-swelled Carolinas
That's where my true love lies
Guessed by

11. Drops of Jupiter, Train
20. Without You, RENT
22. Mercy of the Fallen, Dar Williams
Also, number seven is the best song ever. Aside from this Train business, you and I clearly have similar taste. ;)

Ha, Drops of Jupiter is the only Train song I own. It's one of those songs I sort of got attached to regardless of whether I actually think it's any good. It was all over the radio my senior year of high school with lyrics about leaving and finding yourself that hit the spot at the time. Hooray for otherwise similar tastes. :)

Most of the easier ones have been guessed. About a third of the ones that are left I probably couldn't guess, and they're in my iTunes. ;)

There are still a few that I suspect someone may know.
