Crossover TARDIS heaven: Companions the Doctor should have had
I picked this excellent meme up from
isiscaughey . Here are five companions the Doctor would have been lucky to have.

Kaylee Frye (Firefly)
Shiny! If she stepped inside the TARDIS, Kaylee would rapidly charm her way into companion status through effusive praise of the ship's magnificence. The Doctor wouldn't be able to resist someone that genuine in her appreciation of engines (not to mention possessing engineering skills). In fact, the only major problem with Kaylee as a companion would be getting her out of the TARDIS's innards for a little exploration. Once she did get out the doors, her wide-eyed enthusiasm for new places and new people would make her well suited for TARDIS life. Kaylee is brave in the sense that she gets genuinely scared but doesn't quit. I think I'd pair her with Eight for the most earnest and bubbly Team TARDIS ever.

Dr. John Watson (Sherlock)
John is perfect companion material. We already know that he enjoys following around a mad genius. He's an ace at asking the questions that will get his pet genius to explain the situation so the audience can understand the plot. (In the photo above, he is demonstrating the classic "what is it, Doctor?" face.) However, he's far more than just an excuse for explication. Dr. John Watson is a professional badass. He's the sort who gets a text that says "could be dangerous" and shows up right away. He thrives on danger, but he has a big heart that doesn't forget the individuals involved in the latest exciting calamity. That's something the Doctor needs as much as Sherlock. Like Jack Harkness, John would be the guy who carries a gun, to the Doctor's vocal disapproval but strategic usefulness. He's got enough initiative and general awesomeness to solve some problems alone and save the Doctor as often as the Doctor saves him.
The only problem I see here is that after the meeting with Sherlock, I can't see John heading off to time and space without his flatmate. Sadly, Sherlock and the Doctor would be too good at pushing each other's buttons to get along on a long term basis. The Doctor would have to pick John up pre-Sherlock, or possibly at some future point if the 21st-century version ever follows the book canon of having Sherlock presumed dead for a time.
I was tempted to pair John with Nine, since they would have the camaraderie of soldiers, but upon some thought I don't think that's what either of them needs most. A better choice might be pairing him with Four, since I think John's solidity would be a great balance for Four's loony eccentricity. Besides, John has shown a tendency to follow tall guys in scarves. (John is also quite the ladykiller, and would be likely to attempt to get it on with any fellow companions. I don't know whether to be more excited by the notion of John/Sarah Jane, John/Leela, or John/Romana.) Honestly, however, John would do well with any Doctor.

Elizabeth Bennet (Pride & Prejudice)
Elizabeth Bennet is intelligent, strong-willed, and curious. She's got a wonderful sense of humor and wouldn't hesitate to use it to take the Doctor down a peg if he needed it. In the book, she was thrilled by the prospect of a tour of the Lake District with her aunt, and I think her pleasure at the idea of travel would be multiplied many times if the travel was through time and space. Raxacoricofallapatorious is a LONG way from her annoying family! She's a keen observer of people, and this talent would serve her well among aliens and people from different eras. Lizzy would be a good match for Ten, because she's stubborn enough to stop him when necessary and cheerful enough to keep him from sinking into emo without being obnoxiously perky. I think they would amuse each other endlessly.

Belle (Disney's Beauty & the Beast)
Belle sings:
I want much more than this provincial life!
I want adventure in the great wide somewhere,
I want it more than I can tell.
That's a wish to become the Doctor's companion if I've ever heard one. Belle isn't just wanderlust and romanticism, however. She can see through a frightening or bizarre exterior into the person beneath, a useful quality when dealing with aliens. She doesn't hesitate to offer up her own life for the sake of a person she cares about. She displays the time-honored companion skill of wandering off where she's not supposed to be. Dealing with the TARDIS should be natural after her experience dealing with sentient household furnishings and devices.
Belle should travel with Nine, since grouchy men with secrets are a specialty of hers.

Jamie Hyneman & Adam Savage (Mythbusters)
I'm going to cheat a bit by counting these two guys as one. However, they really should come as a team. Mostly, I like the idea of Adam & Jamie as companions because of the hilarity value of the initial encounter. Adam is a committed skeptic, so watching him wrap his head around the reality of aliens would be great. (Presumably Jamie is too, but I've seen Adam make a big deal of it at Dragon*con. Two years ago, Adam was on a panel quiz show where one event was being assigned a topic for which to argue. Adam was assigned "aliens are real" and basically threw the round because he refused to put forth an argument.) Hearing the laconic Jamie's reaction to the TARDIS interior would be priceless.
Once they had accepted the evidence and joined as companions, the duo's problem-solving abilities would make them extremely useful as companions. They'd be excited to test all sorts of myths about outer space normally outside of the show's budget. They're practically fearless and always willing to try new things. I'd send Adam and Jamie with Seven while Ace was also a companion, because the explosions would be EPIC.
What do you think of these suggestions, friends? I'd also love to see you post your own lists if you feel inspired.

And very fitting an icon it is for the Lizzie-companion bit. Oh boy, she would be awesome. With those sparkling eyes, and impish smile, and completely unrepentantly teasing Ten. I wish someone would write it.
I hadn't thought of Belle, but you're right, that song is certainly an "I wish to be a companion" song, indeed. Finding trouble, check. Empathy, check. Good stuff.
I'm afraid the others on your list I only know by reputation.
Does this meme require one to provide pictures, because if it does, that's too much work for me to want to do it...

No meme police will arrest you for lack of pictures. I think you can put as much or as little work as you like into this. :)

Belle-Nine and Kaylee-Eight are awesome team ups, although Kaylee might be most at home in the spare-parts style TARDIS of Nine and Ten.

That's a good point that Nine & Ten's TARDIS configuration does seem like a more natural fit for Kaylee than Eight's more elegant, steampunk-ish TARDIS. Still, the ship's the same temperamental old Type 40 underneath, so I think they'll get along fine. :)

This is true, at this point she's still held together by bits and bobs and jiggery-pokery underneath any of the desktops, too. They'd be awesome.
